summer fishing derbies make for busy waters during the peak seasons

Silver Salmon Fishing In SEward at The Silver Salmon Fishing DerbyA local tradition for over 50 years, the annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby is one of Alaska's richer fishing derbies. Taking place in August when the waters of Resurrection bay are teeming with salmon, the derby brings lots of fishermen into the area, all eager to land a prize-winning silver. The top prize for the heaviest fish is $10,000. The contest also includes other prizes of up to $100,000 in value including money for catching special tagged fish. Recent contest winners reeled in salmon weighing around 18 pounds. Halibut Fishing In Seward At The Jackpot Halibut Fishing DerbyA newer derby by Alaskan standards, the Jackpot Halibut Derby in Seward takes place in June around the waters of Resurrection Bay. Awards go to the first, second and third heaviest fish caught. There are also daily prizes. Winners generally bring in halibut that weigh over 150 pounds.

Only 126 miles from Anchorage, Seward can be reached a number of
ways - via the Alaska Railroad, bus, air, cruise ship or car.
Bus lines carry passengers from Anchorage to Seward daily.
There isn't a large airport in Seward, but charter planes are
available from Seward into Anchorage. Visitors can drive the
Seward Highway Scenic Byway and experience some of Alaska's
beautiful scenic vistas along the roadway. But by far the most
visually stunning way to travel to Seward is aboard the Alaska
Railroad. The railroad operates daily between Anchorage and
Seward during the summer months. Many cruise lines, including
Holland America, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, and Regent use Seward as a
beginning or ending port for Alaska northbound or southbound
cruises due to the close proximity to Anchorage.
